Discipline(s): Oral Surgery

This is a novel course aimed at advancing the surgical skills of the attendees in various real-life scenarios of reconstruction of bone and soft tissues of the OMF region in dogs. The course involves two full days of advanced training in the techniques and application of 1) internal fixation for mandibular reconstruction to repair critical size defects and 2) repair of soft tissues using axial pattern flaps. Specifically, the attendees will learn and practice a combination of surgical approaches using internal fixation techniques to manage oral and maxillofacial defects on cadaver models. Furthermore, the attendees will learn practical techniques in performing extensive caudal maxillectomy followed by reconstruction. Combined, the attendees will experience realistic scenarios and a diversity of OMF reconstruction modalities. The theoretical lectures are designed to provide the attendees with a platform to understand and perform each procedure. We will cover important imaging and conditions frequently seen in dogs that require reconstruction. Furthermore, we will methodically approach advanced scenarios encountered before, during and after these surgeries. The hands-on labs will be designed to progress from imaging and surgical planning to oral and maxillofacial reconstruction. Reconstruction techniques as part of the management of oral and maxillofacial cancer, or other insults, is challenging and requires advanced training in real-life scenarios. This course is recommended for board-certified surgeons and board-certified dentists as well as for residents interested in advancing to the next level of oral and maxillofacial reconstruction techniques. What the participant will learn or gain from the course: - Learn the benefits and limitations of advanced reconstruction techniques - Advance surgical skills in management of complex oral and maxillofacial reconstruction - Master the art of internal fixation techniques for repair of bone defects of the mandibles - Advance your skills in performing extensive caudal maxillectomy and reconstruction of soft tissue defects using skin flaps Learning Objectives - Increase your understanding of various reconstruction techniques - Increase your understanding the concept and application of internal fixation for mandibular reconstruction - Build skills in a combination of surgical approaches for extensive caudal maxillectomy - Practice soft tissues reconstruction using advanced skin flap techniques to repair of caudal maxillary defects
